For students

Your conversations from these years
should be yours alone.

Not indexed by a tech company. Not stored on a server forever. Not turned into a data product before you've even graduated.

These are the years you figure out who you are

Late-night conversations, half-formed opinions, the relationship you're not sure about, the things you're scared to say out loud. That's the most human, most formative material of your life — and on every mainstream app, it's stored, scanned, and turned into a profile of you.

What you say at 19 shouldn't haunt you at 30

Messages on typical platforms are kept indefinitely. A breach, an acquisition, or a subpoena years from now can surface things you said before you'd even finished becoming yourself. Cipher keeps nothing it can read — and you can set messages to auto-delete.

No directory. No DMs from strangers.

There's no public lookup, no 'people you may know,' no way for someone to find you from a phone number. You connect by sharing a code with people you actually choose. Your social graph isn't a product.

Mental health is private by default

Talking through anxiety, identity, family, faith — the conversations that matter most are exactly the ones that deserve the strongest protection, not ad targeting.

Why pay for it

“Free” apps aren't free. You pay with everything you say.

The apps that cost nothing make money by reading you. Cipher costs $7/monthbecause it makes money the honest way — from people who'd rather pay for privacy than be the product. That's less than two coffees for conversations that stay permanently, mathematically yours.

Honest about the tradeoff

The catch, stated plainly: lose your recovery phrase and your device, and your data is gone.

We can't reset it for you, because we never had it. Write your recovery phrase down and keep it somewhere safe — that's the deal you make for privacy nobody can break. We'd rather tell you that up front than pretend it away.

  • We can't help with content we can't see — report abuse and we'll act on what we can.
  • Cipher is private, not anonymous — your friends still know it's you.
  • It doesn't protect an unlocked phone someone's already holding.

Start the years that matter, privately.
