Pricing
Free is a trial of the privacy,
not the product.
The security architecture — zero-access encryption, the seed-phrase model — is identical at every tier. What you pay for is usage, group access, and the on-device AI layer.

Outside-Number Calling
Call any landline or mobile number worldwide, metered per-minute by destination — priced like a calling card. International rates undercut traditional carriers while keeping your real number masked.
Questions
Straight answers about the model.
Why isn't there a permanently free tier like Signal?
A fully free tier means subsidizing every user's bandwidth, storage, and compute forever with no revenue — which historically pushes companies toward ads or data monetization. Cipher's free tier lets you genuinely test the encryption and experience, then decide it's worth paying for. The privacy is identical; what's metered is usage volume and group access, which is where the real infrastructure cost lives.
Is the encryption weaker on the free tier?
No. Zero-access encryption and the seed-phrase model are identical at every tier, free included. We don't sell a 'more private' version. The only differences are usage limits and access to group features.
Why is outside-number calling priced separately?
Unlike the flat-cost AI features, the cost of calling a real phone number genuinely varies by destination — a domestic call and an international one cost us very different amounts. Pricing it as a metered add-on means we don't overcharge domestic calls or lose money on international ones. It works like a calling card.
Can I call regular phone numbers?
Yes — any landline or mobile worldwide, with your real number masked. WhatsApp and Telegram can't do this at all (they're app-to-app only). Note: the leg to the phone network can't be end-to-end encrypted — that's true of every app offering this — so we disclose it plainly rather than imply otherwise.
What happens to my subscription data?
Payment runs through the App Store or Play Store, which handle billing identity. Cipher's backend receives only a signed receipt — proof that 'this device has a valid subscription,' never a name or card number. No identifier is shared between the payment system and the messaging system, so the two can't be cross-referenced.
